The Museum of Traditions in Biscarrosse
The Museum of Traditions, just a few kilometers from our campsite in Biscarrosse, is a surprising and unique place to discover with the whole family. Traditional heritage and Landes nature are the main characters, thanks to donations from several local families.
Gemmakinga strong Landes tradition
The Biscarrosse Traditions Museum was opened in 1988. It was created by volunteers, proud of their culture and heritage. Numerous remains of tools, photographs and archival documents relating Landes life from the Middle Ages to the modern era are on display.
The tradition of gemmage (or resinage), an activity specific to the traditional exploitation of Landes pine, is strongly represented. This process dates back to Gallo-Roman times, but became widespread in the region around the middle of the 18ᵉ century.
Educational farmand boat trip
To complete this wonderful family day out, the museum also offers a visit to an educational farm. Children will be delighted to discover sheep and chickens, as well as pigs, goats and even donkeys… and a whole host of other surprises.
Young and old alike can feed and cuddle the animals in complete tranquillity, and relax and enjoy a refreshing drink. The highlight of the show: a magnificent blue peacock ready to do cartwheels!
For the more adventurous, the day can be rounded off with a boat trip lasting around two hours. On the program: small wooden bridges, Landes flora and fauna, and you may even spot rare species such as grey cranes.
